How can we learn, work and play in the new collaborative economy?

Coworking Unconference Asia 2017 offered unparalleled insights into the impact of shared working environments, presenting ways to optimise these spaces for the future | 08.Feb.17 - 12.Feb.17

Herman Miller is proud to be Silver Sponsor of the Coworking Unconference Asia 2017 (CUAsia)

The Coworking Unconference Asia (CUAsia) intends to bring together all the movers and shakers from the world of coworking and innovation in Asia and beyond. Initiated by CAAP: Coworking Alliance of Asia Pacific, the event explores how we can learn, work and live in this new collaborative economy.

After two successful editions of CUAsia in beautiful Bali, the event travelled to Chiang Mai, Thailand, in February 2017, with HUBBA Thailand acting as hosting partner. This edition attracted more people than ever: 235 people flocked to Chiang Mai from 35 countries, including the US, South Korea, Mongolia, India, Brazil and Australia.

On show at CUAsia were Herman Miller’s T2 height adjustable desk, Public Landscape and Sayl Chair, along with the Optimis desking system, Activity Chair and Express Chair. Each of these pieces is highly popular in the collaborative community; with their agile designs, each of these pieces perfectly meets the needs of startups and entrepreneurs.

Providing insights into how to design and optimise collaborative spaces at the event was Karen Lam, Performance Environments Strategist for Herman Miller Living Office. She talked about how Living Office concepts engage and help business to design collaborative spaces, and she introduced Passport as a way of monitoring and tracking workplace behaviours in order to improve business productivity.

Tokyo Design Camp #6

A Dialogue with Colour: how place and time influence the way we see colour | 2/4/2017

Herman Miller’s DNA is all about design that solves problems. Our mission is to create innovative products that are beautiful and timeless, and to contribute to the community – something we find great value in. It is this desire to contribute to the community that led Herman Miller Japan to come up with the Design Camp concept. Herman Miller Japan regularly runs these events in collaboration with the Meguro Museum of Art, Tokyo (MMAT) an institute that is known for its educational workshops.

The Design Camp concept first came into being in 2012, as a way of sharing design’s potential with the local population, enabling them to experience design’s benefits firsthand through life-enhancing activities.

The sixth Design Camp was held between 4 and 11 February 2017, with a focus on colour. The theme this time was “A dialogue with colour: how place and time influence the way we see colour”. Bringing their creative expertise to the occasion were the minds behind multidisciplinary design studio SPREAD.

Led by Hirokazu Kobayashi and Haruna Yamada, SPREAD has been creating graphical expressions of time and memory as part of a project they have been working on since 2004. Titled “Life Stripe” and “Life Type”, the project has taken the duo all over the world: they have held exhibitions in Switzerland and Italy, and they have also hosted workshops at Italian universities.

Herman Miller Unveils the Remastered Aeron in Major Asian Cities

Herman Miller Unveils the Remastered Aeron in Major Asian Cities

Asia kickstarts our series of Remastered Aeron launch activities, starting with Hong Kong, then Singapore and Tokyo. | 17.Jan.17 - 24.Jan.17

When the Aeron chair by Herman Miller was first shown to the market in 1994, it was truly revolutionary and unlike any chair that anyone had ever seen or experienced. Designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick had created a superbly comfortable seating machine that set a new benchmark in office furniture. It sold beyond expectations, took its place in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and became a part of popular culture.

Two decades later, Herman Miller has done something bold and brave – it has remastered the iconic Aeron. As Thomas Niergarth, Vice President, New Product Commercialization, Herman Miller Inc. explains, “When you can make something significantly better, that’s the time to change.”

The new and improved Aeron version 2.0 has been designed from the ground up based on advanced data and with new insights on how we work today. Created with agility in mind, the chair’s new key features include a significantly lighter tilt mechanism that responds faster and more naturally to the body’s movement, a zoned back support, and a new PostureFit system, with primary sacral support and secondary lumbar support.

DP Design: Bringing Cosm to Life

DP Design: Bringing Cosm to Life

The Singapore interior design studio presented their vision of Cosm at the Asia launch of Herman Miller’s exciting new office chair. Find out about the creativity behind their unique take on Cosm in the context of the home

DP Design used grids and lines to bring Cosm to life

Herman Miller’s new Cosm chair launched in Asia on 19 September 2018, with an event and a creative exhibition at the XTRA showroom in Singapore. As part of the exhibition, DP Design, a branch of DP Architects that specialises in interiors, presented a creative installation that showed the office chair in the context of the home.

Designed by Studio 7.5, Cosm’s innovative tilt and suspension systems and its flexible frame combine for a chair that responds to your weight – giving you a feeling of weightlessness. This was something DP Design conveyed through their fun, original display, which also showcased Cosm’s personality – something it has by the bucket load. Here, Calliope Lee, associate at the design studio, explains the ideas behind the team’s installation, and their creative process.

Part of Gensler’s display at the launch of Cosm in Singapore in September. This installation reflects Gensler’s view of the Cosm chair in Canyon red

After much fanfare at Milan Design Week earlier this year, Cosm has finally arrived in Asia. Herman Miller celebrated the regional launch with a party on 19 September 2018, in partnership with XTRA in Singapore. Designed by Berlin’s Studio 7.5, this office chair is significant because it marks a real leap forward in the evolution of self-adjusting mechanisms. With such innovation on show, Herman Miller didn’t want to host just any usual launch. That’s why they sought the assistance of Gensler and DP Design in creating an exhibition with a difference, leaving it up to the design firms to present their interpretations of Cosm and its world.

Cosm comes in a variety of shades to suit every space, including Canyon, Glacier and Nightfall

Cosm is the latest task chair from Herman Miller, created by Studio 7.5 in response to the need for a one-size-fits-all seat in today’s agile and shared working environments. Launching at Milan Design Week in April this year, the chair marks Herman Miller’s first foray into self-adjusting chairs, and it’s something of a revolution. It was with excitement, therefore, that the Asian market awaited the arrival of Cosm, which launched in Singapore on 19 September 2018 at the XTRA showroom.

Herman Miller farewells its President of International, helping underprivileged and special needs kids in India at the same time.

Herman Miller believes wholeheartedly in giving back to the communities it works in. As part of this approach, every year the Herman Miller Care team encourages every employee to engage in community welfare and volunteering activities.

When it comes to volunteering activities in India, helping underprivileged children is a key focus for Herman Miller. And on 3 July 2018, Herman Miller India’s mission was twofold: partner with the Hope Foundation to help schoolchildren, and give Andrew Lock, President of Herman Miller International, a fitting farewell as he prepares to retire after 28 years of fruitful service to the brand. Mr. Lock has always shown a keen interest in volunteering activities in India – particularly in relation to activities that help build a positive future for children living in remote areas.

Hope Foundation School, Bangalore

The Herman Miller team discovered the immense joy of spending a day with children when they decided to volunteer at a school on Tannery Road, Bangalore, run by the Hope Foundation.

On 3 July, the day began with a formal welcome from the school’s teachers and management, followed by a tree-planting session: Herman Miller team planted lots of saplings. Next up, the volunteers led a series of pep talks and discussions, teaching the kids about the importance of education, environmental conservation, career counselling, health and hygiene, and more. To make it more fun and interactive for the children the sessions included role play and activities that the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Winners of Liveable Office Awards 2017-2018 Announced in Tokyo Ceremony

Winners set new benchmarks in workplace design at Herman Miller Asia’s Liveable Office Awards 2017-2018

Herman Miller Asia hosted the ceremony night of the Liveable Office Awards on Thursday, 22 March 2018, with finalists coming from China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and the Philippines, all of whom demonstrated and shared innovative new approaches to workplace design with their shortlisted projects.

The mission of the Liveable Office Award is to raise awareness of the importance of good workspace design as a tool for companies to achieve organisational goals. The awards are intended to recognise designers and their firms for their contribution to workplace design, as a means of fostering creativity and collaboration with the A&D community.

This year, Herman Miller Asia received 147 submissions from all over the region, which demonstrated a more diverse range of projects than in previous years, as well as an even higher standard of design and innovation. This year’s awards were held at Herman Miller’s Tokyo Living Office showroom, which was designed by Flooat, Inc., the 2016 winner of the Commercial Business and People’s Choice awards.

For the 2017-2018 awards, Herman Miller Asia worked closely with a highly respected judging panel to narrow the list down to just five finalists per category.

Herman Miller Asia also launch a new awards category at the 2017-2018 awards: Co-working and Collaborative Space. The new category recognises the number of regional co-working spaces that are taking a strategic approach to workspace design, as well as acknowledging that co-working spaces are redefining office design for the industry.

Other categories were Commercial Business – Workspace Design, Best in Tech, and People’s Choice. Those shortlisted were narrowed down to several runners up and one winner per category.

Here's why you should enter the Herman Miller Liveable Office Award 2017-2018

Winning big at the 2015-2016 award has had significant impact on Flooat, Inc.'s business. The design studio talks about what the award meant to them

Donuts, Inc. was in a conundrum. As a young IT services company in Japan, their business was growing rapidly, as was their headcount; but they were struggling to fit all their employees in their office space. They also needed to think about future growth, too. If they moved offices, how could they create a space that would be flexible enough to change as they did?

They took their problem to interior design studio Flooat, Inc., tasking them with creating a space that evoked the constant development and change they were undergoing. Flooat, Inc. met with them several times a week for four months, in a bid to understand the company, where it saw itself in five to 10 years, and its work style.

At Herman Miller we know that the best designs are those holding capacity to improve our common experience, ease the difficulties of our day-to-day life, and extend the horizons of human performance. Of course, it was only natural for us then to partner with famed cycling brand Rapha – a company that truly prides itself on performance-driven design. And across a series of cities across the world, we’ve spent the year together curating a series of architecture and design tours lead by local creative who understand that cycling can give you a new perspective on the cities surrounding us all.

In collaboration with Rapha’s network of clubhouses across the world, we’ve taken the design hunt from the streets of Boulder, San Francisco, New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and even to Melbourne.

Herman Miller Japan and Maharam present “Chromatography: The Colour World of Scholten & Baijings”

Steeped in the rich tradition of Dutch design, Scholten & Baijings’ latest project with Herman Miller Japan and Maharam pushed the boundary for colour in design thinking

When it comes to Dutch design, ‘colour’ is not often the first thing that comes to mind. Consider the rich, dark hues of Marcel Wanders’ interiors and products, the concrete and glass of OMA buildings under Rem Koolhaas, the pastel hues of Viktor and Rolf: synonymous with innovation and playfulness the Dutch scene may be, but it is also tinted with a relatively muted, restrained colour palette. Soon this may no longer be the case, with design studio and husband and wife team Scholten & Baijings going from strength to strength in their bold, colourful design practice.

Herman Miller Design Ride: Melbourne Modern

Put pedal to pavement to explore a city bursting with design. Melbourne Modern draws its influences from Robin Boyd's Victorian Modern and is a celebration of the city's stunning architecture. The best way to get a taste of the design that is Melbourne (the world's most liveable city) is by bike with Richard Weinman, Principal Warren and Mahoney - as he leads the ride.

Starting at Guilford lane, a typical Melbourne Laneway, the ride heads South to take in Melbourne's Art precinct, then west to chill, with thanks to Living Edge, at the iconic Robin Boyd House a residential tour de force. We'll head north to the sculptural Melbourne Museum demonstrating the connection to new and old, then to Council House via Fitzroy High School, and of course include some amazing design along the way. Melbourne architecture, both new and old, demonstrates why the city is Australia's centre of design

Numbers limited on the ride – book through link to secure your place.

The Way of Tea

The Way of Tea

The history of design and the history of tea have always been intertwined. But just how closely are they connected today?

Charles and Ray Eames knew the beauty inherent in the Japanese tea ceremony, and over 65 years since they hosted such a ceremony in the Eames house, design and tea and back on the table together.

In their design as in their life, Charles and Ray Eames placed a critical importance on the relationship between guest and host. They knew that this interplay played a crucial role in life, and brought this to the fore when designing furniture, exhibitions and buildings. This was most clearly exemplified in 1951, when the husband and wife duo hosted a Japanese-style tea ceremony at the Eames House, inviting guests including Charlie Chaplin and Isamu Noguchi.

Celebrating the rebirth of the Aeron chair in the Philippines

Celebrating the rebirth of the Aeron chair in the Philippines

Herman Miller relaunches a classic event, in celebration of the new-and-improved Aeron chair

Two decades after it first broke new ground in ergonomic office solutions, the iconic Aeron chair has undergone a transformation, emerging stronger and better than ever. As we celebrate the launch of the remastered Aeron, it’s a fitting time to reintroduce another Herman Miller icon: Aeron Hockey. The first Asian edition in six years was held on 16 March 2017 in Manila, in partnership with CWC International.

“This chair is the most ergonomic chair in the world, and right now it’s also the best-selling chair in the world,” says Alex Say, Sales Director of Herman Miller in Southeast Asia. “By sitting on the chair and actually playing hockey, it allows the user to demonstrate the different positions the chair can take. It allows the chair to move with the body, it shows that Aeron isn’t just a task chair.”

REACH 2016: The Future of Work & Workplace Design

Find out what some of the industry leaders had to say, see what visitors interacted with and more as we zoom in on some event highlights

How can design energise and drive productivity in the workplace? These were questions at the heart of this year’s REACH, a Herman Miller design festival that saw leaders in the field present their research, know-how and visions for the future of work to their fellows in the industry.

Connection, through open discussion, knowledge sharing, speakers events and playful interaction between people and products, is the aim of the game at REACH, a one-day event that visited five cities this year. REACH kicked off in Beijing on 24 June 2016, then headed to Manila on 21 July, Bangalore on 28 July and Tokyo on 4 August, before finishing up in Melbourne on 15 September.

The events were a great success, bringing together more than 2,000professionals across the Asia-Pacific. Opinion leaders from the likes of the Economist Intelligent Unit, Accenture, Woods Bagot and Gensler, among others, shared market-leading ideas about the workspace, employee engagement, innovation and creativity.

Here, we look back at a few of the standout ideas, moments and designs fromREACH’s five-city tour.

Let’s talk Black and White on Positive Change

Herman Miller partners with Larry Peh, creative director of award-winning design studio &Larry for the launch of positive change campaign at XTRA Herman Miller shop-in-shop in Singapore.

Changes are positive in one way or another, depending on how we take them. Herman Miller is pleased to present the Black & White campaign, bringing out the positive sides of changes with a clear stance in the social costs borne from our actions. We invite you to step up and, together with Herman Miller, turn changes to positive opportunities, and make a better world for everyone.

Larry’s Togather installation , now displaying at XTRA, will be sold in a silent auction with 100 percent of the gross proceeds to go to Children’s Cancer Foundation, the NGO Organization that Larry picked for the campaign.

Through this project, Larry aim to raise awareness among the people to come together and improve the lives of young cancer patients. He hope that all children who are battling cancer will have a hand to hold and someone to lean on. With the support from families, friends and society, we believe that they can find courage and comfort to go through the tough times – and believe in a better tomorrow.

The installation features eight Eames Molded Plywood coffee tables and a single Eames Molded Plywood chair.
