Celebrating the rebirth of the Aeron chair in the Philippines

Herman Miller relaunches a classic event, in celebration of the new-and-improved Aeron chair

Two decades after it first broke new ground in ergonomic office solutions, the iconic Aeron chair has undergone a transformation, emerging stronger and better than ever. As we celebrate the launch of the remastered Aeron, it’s a fitting time to reintroduce another Herman Miller icon: Aeron Hockey. The first Asian edition in six years was held on 16 March 2017 in Manila, in partnership with CWC International.

“This chair is the most ergonomic chair in the world, and right now it’s also the best-selling chair in the world,” says Alex Say, Sales Director of Herman Miller in Southeast Asia. “By sitting on the chair and actually playing hockey, it allows the user to demonstrate the different positions the chair can take. It allows the chair to move with the body, it shows that Aeron isn’t just a task chair.”

When Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick first researched the design for the Aeron in the early 1990s, they discovered that people move a lot as they work. Armed with this evidence, they created a chair that follows suit, mimicking the body’s curves and adapting to its frequent shifts.

Significant advances in material science and engineering led Herman Miller to redesign the Aeron, refining the chair’s ergonomic and anthropomorphic performance with new features such as the PostureFit SL, which provides adjustable sacral and lumbar support, following the shape of the spine to support the entire back. To tie in with the launch of Aeron version 2.0 in the Philippines, Herman Miller decided to bring back Aeron Hockey, Herman Miller’s evolution of office hockey, which is played with a paper puck and makeshift stick. With Aeron Hockey, there are five players on each side, and they sit on Herman Miller Aeron chairs, competing for six minutes (three minutes each way) on purpose-built courts. “It’s basically about having fun, but at the same time, being competitive,” says Say. “The purpose of the game is also to showcase to the world that the Aeron chair is very resilient. It actually has a 12-year warranty, it’s very strong.”

Paying homage to the original, iconic chair while celebrating its re-edition, the games also offer an opportunity for those participating to come together for a bonding, team experience. Project management companies, and architecture and design firms alike brought teams to the table for a fun, relaxed relationship-building exercise. Globe Telecom, Leechiu Property Consultant, Sun Life Financial, Group 3 Design Studio, JLL Philippines, Goudie Associates, Adrianse Group and Santos Knight Frank all sent five-player teams to compete for the title.

After many vigorous matches, the team from Globe Telecom emerged victorious, much to their delight – particularly given the prize for first place. “The winner actually walks off with 10 Aeron chairs as a reward,” says Say. Goudie Associates came in a close second. Congratulations to the winners of the first re-edition of Aeron Hockey, and thanks to each of the impressive teams that took part in the event.

We look forward to welcoming you at the next Aeron Hockey match in Asia. Watch this space – and look out for the new-and-improved Aeron at a store near you.
